In this relaxed workshop taught by Japanese artist and designer Yoko Kawada you will learn introductory technique of “Modern Kintsugi”, mending broken parts of ceramics together, to then apply lacquer and gold metal dust for the decorative finish.
Kintsugi is a century-old Japanese craftwork where broken ceramic objects are pieced back together using natural lacquer and gold dust, based on the philosophy of Wabi Sabi finding beauty in imperfection. The process transforms much loved, worn items into a beautifully crafted, new piece of art. It is a chance to live in a more sustainable way and to rescue objects which would otherwise be discarded.
The modern process you will learn in this workshop follows the same principal of traditional method but uses more accessible, alternative materials which will enable you to complete the whole process within the class and bring a piece home. You will repair a ceramic provided by Yoko in this workshop.
Participants must be over the age of 18. This workshop is not recommended for pregnant women.
