Belvoir St Theatre and Performing Lines present the world premiere of My Urrwai, a deeply personal trip into the life stories, family and culture of Torres Strait Island dancer, comic, teacher, TV star and sometime air guitarist, Ghenoa Gela. Presented as part of the Sydney festival in association with Ilbijerri Theatre Company, My Urrwai is a candid and often humorous reflection on Ghenoa’s cultural and familial inheritance. Ghenoa Gela – little sister, daughter, granddaughter, comic, teacher, rebel, gold-medallist, air-guitarist, charmer, TV star, Torres Strait mainlander, walking political statement. And now she’s made a show, told through movement and words. She’s drawing on the traditional and the everyday, the political and the personal, to tell a story that’s irreverent, provocative and moving. A uniquely enthralling and multi-faceted performer, Ghenoa was the recipient of the 2016 Keir Choreographic Award, and the 2017 winner of the Deadly Funny Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. For Ghenoa, laughter and deep reflection go hand-in-hand. As much a celebration of her heritage as it is an exploration of her place in contemporary Australia, My Urrwai invites audiences to experience the interplay of political, social and colonial expectations Ghenoa dances with daily.
