Phoenix Choir's annual Christmas concerts are a regular feature of the Blue Mountains calendar. Rheinberger’s, The Star of Bethlehem, written in 1890, is a delightful Romantic choral cantata too rarely heard in Australia. The libretto, written by his wife Fanny, tells the Christmas story of shepherds, angels and the wise men following the guiding star through a series of songs and pastoral choruses. The Phoenix Choir are joined by local soloists Briony Davidson (Soprano) and Henrik Eneberg (Bass) to premiere a new English translation and new arrangement of this work by Rowen Fox for wind and piano chamber ensemble, choir and soloists. Flute, Oboe, Clarinet and Cor Anglais all emphasise the exotic lyrical style of this charming work.
