The Song Company Presents: True Love Story
57-59 MacLeay Street, Potts Point, NSW, 2011, Australia
5th June 2018
Australia’s premier vocal ensemble The Song Company brings you a mediaeval French romance from a time of war and plague, as told by the poet and composer Guillaume De Machaut. Regarded as one of the greatest and most important composers of the 14th century, be transported to 1360 where Machaut entertained the heir to the throne following the Hundred Years’ War. It was at this time Machaut began a lengthy correspondence with a young female admirer Peronnelle D’armentières. Machaut meticulously documented their relationship in what he called the Le Livre du Voir Dit - “book of the true story”, . Containing over 9000 lines of poetry, letters, love-poems, and songs they sent to each other it is the ultimate 14th-century multimedia presentation. Whilst the accuracy of Machauts account is at times questionable, with contradictory recollections, the passion conveys what must have been a true love story. Yet again, The Song Company is breaking new ground with their creative take on medieval classics.
