Time and Tide

Following a time of winter hibernation, the splendour of nature becomes more pronounced. Details in the landscape seem refreshed and anew. For highly skilled Canberra artists Sue Hewat (Ceramics) and Sara Freeman (Painting) who source their inspiration from coastal light, and the textures and rhythms of nature it is the perfect time to open their combined exhibition Time and Tide at Suki and Hugh Gallery, Bungendore. Lines, webs and surface textures are the common threads, with both artists creatively pushing the boundaries of their chosen mediums. Sue’s work is about the beach, particularly the intertidal zone and the transient nature of the ebb and flow of the tide. By carefully considering the design elements of shape, colour, pattern and texture, Sue aims to represent the layers, lines and threads that are evident on the shore. Sara builds fields of colour in multiple layers using organic materials including saponified wax and egg tempera. Slowly constructing, carving and washing away the surface in a meditative practice that traces the interface between time and presence.
