'Should you stay looking at the camera?' 'Always'. The eponymous anti-hero of this new Australian play works for a broadcast news company. Employed for his idealistic ‘truth-saying’, ex-Survivor contestant Tom William Mitchell works his way up from the copy room to the interview couch in a matter of weeks. But will he stay true to his convictions? And why does the Network head invite him into the strange blue room at the heart of the building? This razor-sharp satire on hyper-mediatised society examines the rise of contemporary populism, and how maybe you are all just a few clicks away from stardom. Written and directed by Mark Rogers, this new production mashes up TV news with contemporary theatre aesthetics, creating a piece of new writing for the here and now. Picked up by Merrigong-X for a reworked season in the Bruce Gordon, this is sure to be one of the most anticipated theatre-events on Wollongong’s 2018 calendar. Sensationalist, overblown and completely untrue, Tom William Mitchell is news and politics in extreme close-up. As TWM himself says at the play’s outset: Truth. Really?
