Rapid progress has been made at the site, from the 1st concrete poured in May to the skeleton structure completed in September. Health Minister Jillian Skinner hailed the work of the builders and tradespeople on-site and said the progress is “incredible to see”.

“The South East Regional Hospital will change the way health care is delivered to the Bega Valley and beyond. It will be a state-of-the-art hospital which will care for the community for decades to come”, Minister Skinner said.

She added, “134 inpatient beds will be available when the new hospital opens - more than the current Bega and Pambula Hospitals combined – and, like all our hospital developments, the facility is future-proofed to meet increasing patient demand.

The new South East Regional Hospital will be built to a scale never before seen in the region. It will boast a floor area around the size of 4 ½ football fields and 6 Olympic-sized swimming pools of concrete will be used to construct it.

Once completed, the new Hospital’s facilities will include:

  • An expanded emergency department.
  • Additional integrated critical care beds (incorporating intensive care, high dependency and coronary care beds).
  • Expanded perioperative and operating suite services.
  • New and expanded acute medical, surgical, maternity and paediatrics services.
  • An inpatient sub-acute care unit focusing on rehabilitation and palliative care.
  • Increased inpatient mental health beds and improved Community Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol services by bringing the services together in the one facility.
  • Expanded specialist, community, primary and ambulatory care services (oncology, haematology, renal and Hospital in the Home) and oral health services.
  • A range of clinical support services including medical imaging, pharmacy and pathology.A helipad.
  • Car parking for about 500 cars.

Construction of the South East Regional Hospital is on track for completion in early 2016.
