Brigadier Darren Naumann to lead storm recovery

Retired Brigadier Darren Naumann has been appointed to the role of Regional Recovery Coordinator for the Hunter and Central Coast floods.

With over 34 years’ service in the Australian Army, Brigadier Naumann has undertaken a range of military engineering and infrastructure management appointments. For the past 13 years he has held various roles with the Defence Infrastructure Division.

Brigadier Naumann will chair the Regional Recovery Committee, which will include representatives from the affected local government Councils and Shires, key government agencies such as State Emergency Services, Police, Family and Community Services, Health and Transport.

Premier Mike Baird said the recovery work of the State Emergency Service and other agencies had been outstanding but noted there was a hard road ahead. “There are still communities under severe duress, and I want to make sure that the recovery effort is as coordinated and effective as possible.

“Brigadier Darren Naumann is the ideal person to make that happen, and I am deeply thankful that he has accepted this appointment,” Mr Baird said.

A major part of the work for Brigadier Naumann will involve engaging with communities and businesses to understand their needs in terms of the damage the floods have inflicted on the community, the economy, infrastructure and the environment.

A priority for Brigadier Naumann will be to ensure two Recovery Centres are opened at Dungog and at Maitland. These centres will be a one–stop shop for information and assistance from a variety of agencies for people affected by the storms and floods.

Brigadier Naumann will provide a report after three months on the progress of the recovery.

Premier Baird and the Minister for Emergency Services David Elliott also announced the government has put in place legal protections, so that emergency services volunteers involved in the storm recovery operations are not penalised by their employer.

The order, signed by the Premier, to protect volunteers in certain local government areas will be in force for one month.

The order ensures volunteers are not penalised by their employers for giving up their time to volunteer.

"While most employers do the right thing and support their employees' service to the community, this order is designed to give our volunteers peace of mind that their regular job is safe while they are involved in essential emergency service work,” Minister for Emergency Services David Elliott said.
