Community housing providers to manage social housing

Published 6th October, 2016 in Family & Community Services

Family and Community Services (FACS) will transfer management of approximately 18,000 properties to the community sector.

Not-for-profit community housing providers will manage social housing properties in the Shoalhaven, Northern Sydney, Mid North Coast and parts of the Hunter New England regions to deliver better outcomes for tenants and the community.

Minister for Social Housing Brad Hazzard said tenants of the over 28,000 social housing homes already managed by community housing providers reported very high satisfaction with the level of services offered.

“Community housing has shown it is innovative and can help vulnerable tenants to achieve positive outcomes, such as securing employment and education,” Mr Hazzard said.

Tenants’ lease length and conditions will not change and their income after rent will remain the same. In addition, tenants of homes managed by community housing providers will be able to access Commonwealth rent assistance, worth up to $1 billion over the next 20 years.

Community housing providers will be able to bid to manage the properties from early 2017. FACS will keep tenants updated as their areas transition to community housing providers.
