Get ready for the next George Street closure
Minister for Roads Duncan Gay urged Sydneysiders to get prepared for further transport changes and for motorists to leave their cars at home and use public transport where possible to avoid major delays.
“Our message is clear – leave your car at home and use public transport where possible. Those who need to drive should re-time their journeys away from the busiest peak periods and opt for the preferred routes on the city’s edges,” Mr Gay said.
New changes to the CBD
The section of George Street between Market Street and Park Street will close from late evening on Wednesday 2 December 2015.
Expect heavy traffic and delays in Market Street and Park Street and the surrounding roads.
Motorists are advised to use College Street when heading north or south of the CBD as well as the outer city routes including Goulburn Street, Macquarie Street, the Cahill Expressway and the Western Distributor.
All cross-road areas across George Street will remain open with intersection work restricted to nights or weekends.
Authorised access will be available to residents, as well as freight, tradies, service and emergency vehicles in these sections.
Taxis entering the Hilton Hotel via Pitt Street will still be able to exit left onto George Street.
Business as usual for shoppers
With the closure of George Street a rolling pop-up program of Christmas activities will take place in the newly created pedestrian space from 5 December.
CBD residents, workers and visitors can continue Christmas shopping and enjoy an almost vehicle-free George Street from King to Market and Market to Park streets.
