Get Ready Weekend prompts actions as Bush fire season arrives

Bushfire season has arrived and communities across NSW are being urged to create Bush Fire Survival Plans to protect themselves from the rising threat.

Saturday 18 October will mark the start of ‘Get Ready Weekend’, where bush fire preparation tips will be made available from Bunnings stores across bush fire prone parts of the State.

NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said there is an urgent need for people to prepare for bush fire now.

“We’re encouraging people to work with their neighbours and talk about the fire risk in their area and what they plan to do if there is a fire. You can even have some fun with Get Ready Weekend - like organising a street party or get-together,” said Commissioner Fitzsimmons.

He added, “You dramatically improve your chances of surviving a devastating bush fire and saving your home by taking simple steps such as cleaning out your gutters, trimming overhanging branches and understanding the Fire Danger Ratings”.

Commissioner Fitzsimmons encourages everyone to complete a Bush Fire Survival Plan or get the MyFirePlan app for their phone.

Download the digital Get Ready Kit from the Rural Fire Service website for everything you need to get involved. It includes handy tools such as graphics and photos for social media, invites for your event, posters for printing, and an event guide.
