Hospital building boom boosts jobs

NSW’s hospital building boom is supporting more than 25,000 construction-related jobs, says NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and Minister for Health Jillian Skinner.

Mr O’Farrell and Mrs Skinner made this announcement at NSW’s largest hospital construction project site - the $324 million Stage 1 redevelopment of Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital.

Also joining them were local MPs Bart Bassett (Londonderry), Kevin Conolly (Riverstone), Tanya Davies (Mulgoa) and Andrew Rohan (Smithfield) as they toured the Blacktown campus.

Almost $5 billion for hospital upgrades

The NSW Government has committed almost $5 billion to upgrading hospital infrastructure in its first four-year term.

The health capital works program will support:

  • More than 10,000 jobs directly associated with constructing hospitals and health care facilities.
  • More than 15,000 jobs indirectly supported by constructing these hospitals and health care facilities, such as architects, hospital equipment manufacturers and designers.

Health Infrastructure calculated these jobs figures based on NSW Treasury guidelines on Estimated Total Cost of projects.

Hospital upgrades spread across NSW

Major metropolitan health capital works projects are underway in: Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital, Campbelltown Hospital, Hornsby Hospital, Nepean Hospital, St George Hospital and planning of the new Northern Beaches Hospital.

Major rural and regional capital works projects are underway in: Wagga Wagga Hospital, Tamworth Hospital, South East Regional Hospital (Bega), Port Macquarie Hospital, Dubbo Hospital, Kempsey Hospital, Lismore Hospital, Parkes Hospital, Forbes Hospital and planning of the new Maitland Hospital.
