The new buildings will incorporate the latest energy efficiency, ecological sustainability and IT practices.

The upgrade’s design process will include options for:

  • new classrooms
  • visual arts and science labs
  • woodwork and metalwork
  • food technology
  • library, performance and canteen facilities
  • training facilities and playing fields.

The Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund will contribute $5.3 million towards the upgrade.

Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli, welcomed the extra funding.

“This is wonderful news for Hunter Sports High, which is clearly in need of a major upgrade. I am sure the entire school community – including parents, teachers and, most importantly, students – will be very happy to know this work will begin soon,” Mr Piccoli said.

Member for Charlestown Dr Andrew Cornwell said the 800 plus student school had been in a state of disrepair since it was badly damaged in the Newcastle Earthquake in 1989.

Construction should commence in September 2015, with an anticipated completion date in January 2017.
