Marie Bashir Mental Health Centre opens
The facility is named in honour of former NSW Governor Professor Marie Bashir, who has made a significant contribution to mental health care in NSW.
The new 6 storey, 73 bed centre is one of the most advanced psychiatric centres in the world. The centre is set to accommodate over 2000 patients each year, and will house the State’s eating disorder services under one roof for the first time.
Premier Mike Baird said there could be no more fitting way to honour Professor Bashir’s lifelong dedication to improving mental health care.
“Throughout her professional life, Dame Marie showed an incredible devotion to improving the lives of those living with mental illness,” Mr Baird said.
“The Professor Marie Bashir Centre will make a significant difference in the lives of generations of people affected by mental illness and will ensure Dame Marie’s legacy lives on.”
The Professor Marie Bashir Centre is a joint initiative between Sydney Local Health District, the NSW Government and the University of Sydney.
