Sydney’s Queen Mary building will undergo a refurbishment to provide much needed additional student accommodation.

The refurbishment will provide affordable accommodation for around 800 international and domestic students.

Parliamentary Secretary for Tertiary Education and Skills Mark Speakman said that education was NSW’s largest export after coal, and this milestone helped underpin NSW’s tertiary education and international education sector.

“The Queen Mary Building has been sitting vacant since 2002, so it is great to see the building being refitted to provide affordable accommodation for local and international students", he said.

The University of Sydney purchased the Queen Mary Building from the NSW Government last year for $27 million excluding GST, through the Government’s Unsolicited Proposals Process.

The Government will reinvest proceeds into the Missenden Mental Health Unit development at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
