Opal data for apps to improve travel

Published 24th August, 2016 in Technology

New Opal data allows bus commuters to see how full their next bus is before it arrives.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said the new Opal data gives mobile devices real-time information, such as whether a bus is empty, has seating or is crowded.

With this information, customers can make the choice to jump on a bus or wait for the next service.

“We know there are busy bus routes across the metro area, so letting customers know how busy their service is will enable them to make commuting choices earlier,” Mr Constance said.

Travel app NextThere is the first to go live with the new feature, showing icons on services to indicate the volume of people travelling on the service. Users of the apps TripView, Metrarove, Arrivo and TripGo can expect to access the increase in data in future updates.
