The NSW Government are inviting private sector firms to submit proposals to design, construct, operate and maintain the rail freight line.

The Registration of Interest process is part of an innovative, market-based approach where private companies will be encouraged to manage freight demand and ensure the commercial viability of the rail line.

Transport for NSW Freight and Regional Development will manage the Registrations of Interest for the partially constructed line, set to connect the Main Southern Railway at Maldon to Dombarton, near Port Kembla.

Minister for the Illawarra John Ajaka described the rail freight line as “an unfinished story in Australian infrastructure”, with the rail line remaining incomplete since construction started back in 1983.

“The Maldon to Dombarton line would provide additional rail freight capacity directly in and out of Port Kembla and help cater for the forecasted doubling of freight movements in NSW over the next 20 years,” Minister Ajaka said.
