A trial program will give communities access to public school playgrounds during the summer holidays.

The Come Play Summer Pilot program will open the gates of 42 public school playgrounds in NSW to allow recreational and play space to be used, including ovals and sports courts.

Schools in the program will be open from 8am to 6pm from 23 December 2018 to the end of the school holidays in late January 2018.

Education Minister Rob Stokes said schools are an important part of every community and often occupy prime open space.

“Our schools have a range of quality recreational and play facilities and we are making them accessible to the broader community outside of the school term,” Mr Stokes said.

The schools will receive a $15,000 grant to help upgrade their facilities for community and school use.
