Taronga Zoo awarded six-star environmental rating
The Taronga Institute of Science and Learning has been awarded a maximum six-star certification in a massive win for the environment.
An initiative developed by the Green Building Council of Australia, Green Star assesses the sustainable design, construction and operation of buildings.
Taronga Zoo Sydney and Taronga Western Plains Zoo Dubbo have also secured carbon neutral certification under the National Carbon Offset Standard six years ahead of schedule.
To receive carbon neutral certification, organisations must show they are committed to taking action on climate change by reducing carbon emissions on a continuous basis, and offset remaining emissions by investing in carbon reduction projects.
Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton said Taronga is now one of the nation’s greenest zoos.
“Taronga has shown that there is a shared future for both wildlife and people,” Ms Upton said.
“This recognition also demonstrates the NSW Government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and I would encourage other organisations to strive for these benchmarks."
