The Sydney measures include 1.30am alcohol lockouts and 3am last drinks while the whole of NSW will have a ban on takeaway alcohol after 10pm.

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell said the recent violent incidents demanded strong action, and that the government was determined to implement measures quickly to create safer streets and tackle drug and alcohol abuse in the community.

“Businesses and patrons will need to adjust to the changes because improving the safety and amenity of the CBD is in everyone’s interests.”

NSW Police and inspectors will be out ensuring compliance with the new measures. Failure to comply can result in fines of up to $11,000 and/or imprisonment of up to a year.
