Passenger services for the link are on track, and will begin in 2015 – one year earlier than originally planned. The project is also $100 million under the $2.1 billion budget.
Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian said each of these crossings were a significant achievement. “The 80-metre Hume Highway underpass for example was constructed while tens of thousands of drivers passed overhead, across eight lanes of traffic,” she said.
Completion of the 14 structures includes:
- Approximately 1.3 kilometres of bridges along the Glenfield to Leppington rail line component of the link.
- All bridges are designed to allow for future road widening if required.
- The Hume Highway underpass involved more than 10,000 work hours, completed by two, six-man crews working back-to-back shifts.
- Excavation of the underpass was completed over 540 hours in nine weeks.
- Continuous 24/7 real time ground movement immediately monitored any shifts in the Hume Highway’s road pavement.
- Construction of a 500 metre viaduct using almost 100 40-tonne beams to carry the new rail line over Cowpasture Road, the heritage listed Upper Canal waterway and the future Byron Road extension.
Work is also steaming ahead on the project with 31 kilometres of track and 53,000 sleepers laid.
