The jointly funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements are providing the assistance.
Commonwealth Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services Stuart Ayres jointly announced the assistance.
Mr Keenan said the Commonwealth and NSW Governments were committed to working together to assist affected Byron Shire communities recover from storm damage and flooding.
“The December storms caused significant damage to public infrastructure across the Byron Shire and extensive clean-up operations were undertaken by council,” Mr Ayres said.
“The assistance will help council with the cost of restoration or replacement of essential public assets damaged during the storms and will ensure the Byron community has the necessary support to recover.”
NSW Member for Ballina Don Page welcomed the assistance saying the Byron Shire Council had substantial clean up costs after the storm, which included clearing trees and other debris from roads and repairing road slips and washouts to several local roads.
“There were large costs associated with repairing land slips and wash outs of Wilsons Creek Road, St Helena Road and Settlement Road following the storms,” Mr Page said.
