Dot Sydney domains to spark online real estate boom
From early 2015, .sydney will give NSW businesses and internet users the opportunity to register local city-based online domain names.
NSW Finance and Services Minister Dominic Perrottet today said the introduction of .sydney web addresses will fuel an online real estate boom for the city’s digital economy.
“Only a handful of the world’s biggest cities have applied for their online name which means these web addresses have a competitive edge in digital branding”, Mr Perrottet said.
The launch of .sydney domains is part of a top-level domain program initiated by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the global regulator of web addresses. Mr Perrottet said the new domains will boost the State’s digital economy, offering greater choice and availability.
“We expect that .sydney will transform the digital economy of the city,” said Mr Perrottet. “These domains will give businesses a new and highly targeted channel to communicate to their Sydney-based customers.”
The move provides great opportunities for early adopters to dominate specific market niches with top-level domain names like café.sydney, electrician.sydney or realestate.sydney.
