Five minutes could save your life
To survive the threat of bush fires, it’s important for individuals and families to have a bushfire plan. To help people make their plan, the NSW Rural Fire Service has launched an online tool “How fire proof is your plan?”.
The tool helps people decide if they should leave early or prepare to stay, based on their individual circumstances, such as if they:
- have children, dependents, elderly or sick household members
- are mentally, physically and emotionally prepared to defend their property for hours or days at a time
- have the necessary firefighting equipment.
The tool prompts people with questions to help them develop a detailed action plan, so that if there is a bush fire they know exactly what they will do and when.
Minister for Emergency Services Troy Grant said while most people in bushfire prone areas say they have a plan, there’s a strong chance that they’re not sufficiently prepared for a bushfire.
“The message this bushfire season is clear: to give you and your property the best chance of survival you need to seriously prepare and plan ahead,” Mr Grant said.
“We need people to take this seriously and get ready now, not just wait to see what happens.”
