NSW Telco Authority is collaborating with the Victorian Government on a cross-border roaming trial to improve radio interoperability for emergency services.
NSW Telco Authority is partnering with Victoria to trial cross-border radio roaming for emergency services, improving how first responders communicate during emergencies that span state borders.
The trial will test the ability for radios to automatically switch between the New South Wales and Victorian public safety networks, without the need for reprogramming or swapping devices. Enabling emergency services personnel to stay in contact with their home networks and access key functions, such as location tracking and emergency alerts, even when operating across borders.
This capability is particularly important during natural disasters like bushfires and floods, where teams from multiple jurisdictions often respond together and need reliable communications.
The NSW-Victoria roaming trial builds on the success of Australia’s first interstate roaming service launched by NSW and Queensland in 2023.
NSW Telco Authority continues to lead work on strengthening critical communications infrastructure and supporting interoperability between jurisdictions, to ensure emergency services can operate safely and effectively across borders.
