Powerhouse Museum celebrates 25 years
The Powerhouse Museum is celebrating 25 years as one of Australia’s leading cultural institutions.
This month marks a quarter of a century of the museum entertaining and educating millions of people in lifestyles, applied arts and sciences in its current premises at Ultimo.
Since opening in 1988, the Powerhouse Museum has captivated more than 17 million visitors with a wide array of exhibitions.
The museum has more than 500,000 items in its collection covering history, science, technology, design, industry, decorative arts, music and space exploration.
Along with blockbuster exhibitions such as Star Wars, Harry Potter and the Wiggles which attracted record attendances, the museum has a strong regional presence with touring exhibitions that have attracted more than 7.5 million people.
The museum holds the record for the highest attendance for a paid exhibition in NSW, with the Harry Potter exhibition from November 2011 to April 2012 attracting 382,739 visitors.
In its 25th anniversary year, the museum will present a variety of exhibitions, programs and web-based content highlighting human innovation.
