Following another shark attack off Ballina this week, the NSW Government is seeking Commonwealth approval for a six-month trial of shark nets to protect surfers and swimmers.
The trial complements other measures in the government's Shark Management Strategy to help reduce the risk of shark attacks, including:
- shark listening stations
- aerial surveillance
- eco-friendly shark barriers
- Shark Management Alert in Real Time (SMART) drumlines.
The shark net trial's design and implementation will be guided by consultation with the local community.
