In response to the devastating 2022 floods, the Community Resilience Grants Program was created to support long-term recovery across the Northern Rivers.
Thanks to a $1 million investment from the Reconstruction Authority, and in partnership with the Northern Rivers Community Foundation, 20 grassroots organisations received funding to deliver essential services, ranging from material aid and housing support to mental health care and social connection.
Northern United Rugby League Football Club’s story:
A community-led program by the Northern United Rugby League Football Club (NU) has shown how sport can become a powerful platform for connection, cultural strength and youth support.
The initative brought together three yarning circles for young Aboriginal males (15–19 years) with Elders and mentors and coordinated a Debutante Ball for 50 youth (25 girls and 25 boys).
In the lead-up, participants attended 12 sessions learning traditional Bundjalung dances and workshops on healthy eating, smoking/vaping, and mental health.
Funding also helped strengthen their organisation, secure four new grants, and plan for future growth in junior rugby league.
Strong communities are built through connection, and sometimes all it takes is a safe space to sit, yarn and be heard.
