A digital identity is a private and secure way to prove your identity when accessing services or completing transactions online and in-person. It removes the need to prove your identity through face-to-face interactions and by using physical identity documents.
The NSW Government is building a future where your digital identity is private and secure, but also convenient in a way we've never experienced before. Your personal information should be stored securely on your mobile device, not centrally held by government organisations or commercial businesses.
Putting you in control of your identity
NSW Digital ID will enhance your privacy and put you in control of your identity. You will be able to prove your identity without having to overshare your personal information. This will take the hassle out of registering and applying for things you need – accessing government services, applying for a licence or grant, opening a bank account, changing utility providers, enrolling children in school and more.
Digital versions of all your most needed credentials, such as your birth certificate, working with children check or driver licence, will be encrypted and sit within a private digital wallet on your mobile device. It's about making it easier to privately store your information and share it with who you want securely, so you are always in control. You can update who has access at any point, and it is always your choice.
No more oversharing
While NSW Digital ID and digital credentials won’t replace the paper and plastic versions of your credentials, it will give you an option to digitally share confirmation of who you are and what you’re eligible for. You will no longer have the inconvenience of needing to share scans and copies of your physical documents and cards when proving your identity.
NSW Digital ID will be opt-in and simple enough for anyone to use. It will provide greater accessibility, particularly for people with a disability, those who are time poor, or who live in rural or regional areas. This will put all people in NSW in control of their digital identity and credentials.
It’s time to embrace a digital identity that truly puts you in control of your personal information. No more oversharing!
