Work plays an important role in our wellbeing, helping us grow, connect with others and find purpose. A workplace injury can interrupt that, especially if it means time away from work, which can slow physical and mental recovery.
Evidence shows that staying at or returning to work during recovery leads to better long-term outcomes. It speeds recovery, reduces disability, maintains social connection that supports mental health and increases the likelihood of returning successfully. The longer you’re away, the harder it can be to return.
Here’s some tips to support your recovery:
- Staying connected and communicating with your employer is a collaborative way to achieving safe recovery at work.
- It’s not always appropriate to be in regular contact with your people leader. If that’s the case, lean on your return to work coordinator, People Culture & Talent and/or WH&S team for support, and nominate an appropriate alternate contact to ensure you can stay connected with your agency as you recover.
- Work with your employer to find suitable work options and develop a written recover at work plan with your People Leader and return to work coordinator, so you all know what you’re working towards.
- Recovering at work leads to better outcomes for you. Working helps you stay active, which can reduce symptoms and help you return to your usual activities at home and work sooner.
