Tools and resources for monitoring recordkeeping
Find out what tools and resources are available to assist in monitoring records management and recordkeeping performance in your public office.
Records Management Assessment Tool
The Records Management Assessment Tool (RMAT) is a self-assessment tool designed to assess the conformity of the public office with requirements of the State Records Act 1998 and standards issued under the Act, capacity of a public office in achieving best practice records management, that is, extending beyond the minimum requirements.
Standards
Each standard issued by State Records NSW has compliance timetables, which list all requirements contained in the Standard.
Monitoring guidelines
These guidelines cover performance monitoring of records management programs and recordkeeping within a public office. They provide practical tools and examples to help public offices establish their own monitoring program that meets their organisation’s recordkeeping objectives.

Recordkeeping monitoring exercise
The basis for the recordkeeping monitoring exercise is provided by section 12(4) of the State Records Act which requires each public office to report on its records management program in accordance with arrangements made with the Authority.
The state of recordkeeping report 2024 includes the summary results of the recordkeeping monitoring exercise.
The results can be used for benchmarking against the rest of the jurisdiction or by ‘public office type’.
