NorthConnex will allow motorists to bypass 40 sets of traffic lights along the Pacific Highway to the Sydney CBD, and all traffic lights between Newcastle and Melbourne.


The NorthConnex is a 9-kilometre motorway tunnel that will link the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills. 

Key benefits of the NorthConnex include:

  • fewer trucks, reduced traffic congestion and up to 15 minutes shorter travel times on Pennant Hills Road
  • less noise and traffic, as well as improved safety and air quality, on local streets
  • a more efficient state and national freight route.

How the project is tracking

Work underground is progressing well, with all trenching expected to be completed by mid 2019. The project team is continuing with paving, tunnel lining and painting.

Above ground, the Motorway Control Centre at West Pennant Hills has reached its full height and work to fit out the facility is underway.

When complete in 2020, NorthConnex will be the longest and deepest road tunnel in Australia.

When Stage 2 of the Sydney Metro is complete, the new, fully automated railway will provide turn-up-and-go metro train services between 31 stations along a 66km railway.
