Step 12: Other considerations
Some projects may need extra checks or approvals depending on location, land zoning, or specific site risks. These are not always required but should be reviewed before starting any riparian or in-stream works.
Bushland and public open space
If the works are in Sydney or Gosford on land zoned or reserved for public open space, check State Environmental Planning Policy No. 19 – Bushland in Urban Areas. This policy protects remnant bushland in urban zones.
Sydney drinking water catchment
If your site is in the Sydney drinking water catchment, your works must have a neutral or beneficial effect on water quality. Check the State Environmental Planning Policy (Sydney Drinking Water Catchment) 2011 and Water NSW guidance before works begin.
Contamination and asbestos
If your site contains hazardous contamination, asbestos, or asbestos-containing materials, contact:
- SafeWork NSW for work health and safety and licensing advice.
- NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) for contaminated land management and disposal rules.
Weeds and pest management
Check your Regional Weeds Plan for local weed control requirements. Contact your Local Land Services (LLS) office for help managing weeds or pests.
Find your local LLS office.
Dams and water storage
If you plan to construct or modify an erosion control dam, or harvest additional water, contact DCCEEW to confirm licensing and harvestable rights.
Get advice early
If you are unsure whether any of these apply:
- contact your local council or LLS office
- use the NSW ePlanning Spatial Viewer to check relevant zoning and environmental layers.
