Step 6: Do the works impact an area subject to coastal management considerations?
Use this step to check if your works are within or near a coastal management area as defined under the Coastal Management Act 2016 and the State Environmental Planning Policy (Resilience and Hazards) 2021.
These laws protect sensitive coastal environments and manage development in coastal zones.
Do the works impact an area subject to coastal management considerations?
If you answered yes
If your site is within a mapped coastal management area, you must consider how the proposal aligns with coastal zone objectives and planning controls.
The four mapped coastal management areas are:
- coastal wetlands and littoral rainforests area
- coastal vulnerability area
- coastal environment area
- coastal use area.
Depending on your location and type of work, you may need to:
- lodge a Development Application (DA)
- prepare an Environmental Impact Assessment if required
- get any approvals related to coastal protection works.
For guidance, check the Coastal management framework.
If you are not sure
If you’re unsure whether your site falls within a coastal management area:
- use the NSW ePlanning Spatial Viewer to check mapped coastal zones
- contact your local council to confirm which coastal zone your project area is in and what controls apply
- you can also contact the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) for coastal mapping advice.
