Why Takata airbags are dangerous

Takata airbags have been recalled in vehicles across Australia due to extreme safety risks. In a crash the airbag can go off causing sharp metal fragments to kill or injure people in the vehicle.

More than three million vehicles are affected. One in four Australian vehicles are fitted with faulty Takata airbags.

How to check your vehicle is safe

Find out if your vehicle has a faulty Takata airbag on the Is My Airbag Safe website.

If your vehicle is listed, contact your manufacturer immediately to get it replaced for free.

The vehicle manufacturer will also try to contact you to replace the airbag.

Transport for NSW will only contact you if the manufacturer can’t get in touch with you.

If you don’t replace a faulty airbag

If you don’t replace a faulty airbag in a vehicle you own we will send you a warning letter. The letter gives you 28 days to replace the airbag by contacting the manufacturer.

If the faulty airbag has not been replaced in 28 days, your vehicle registration will be suspended. We will advise you of the suspension by letter.

Once your vehicle has been suspended you cannot drive it, sell it or transfer ownership. It's against the law to drive an unregistered vehicle or allow someone else to drive it. Find out the penalties.

We will only reinstate the registration if you provide evidence the airbag has been replaced.

How to prove you’ve replaced a faulty airbag

If you’ve had the airbag replaced and have not received a warning letter from us, you don’t need to do anything.

If you get a warning letter from us and then get a manufacturer to replace the airbag, send the repairer’s service invoice or certificate to:

takata.recall@transport.nsw.gov.au

Once you send us the certificate or invoice we will check the document and lift the registration suspension. You will receive written confirmation.

Interstate registered vehicles

You will not be able to register a vehicle in NSW, which is currently registered interstate, if the faulty airbag has not been replaced. You need to provide a repairer invoice or certificate as evidence of airbag replacement when you visit a Service NSW service centre to establish the vehicle registration.

If you have questions about your Takata airbag, please call 02 8837 0441.

Unregistered vehicles

You will not be able to re-establish registration for a vehicle, which is currently unregistered, if the faulty airbag has not been replaced. You need to provide a repairer invoice or certificate as evidence of airbag replacement when you visit a Service NSW service centre to establish the vehicle registration.
