How to register a light vehicle in NSW that's been written-off in another state

3 steps to registering a light vehicle from interstate that has been written off in another state: repair, inspect and apply.

Register a written-off vehicle from interstate

1

Repair and re-register the vehicle while interstate

If you own a light vehicle that's been written-off interstate, it must be repaired, inspected, and registered interstate before you can apply for NSW registration. You'll need to follow the rules that apply for written-off vehicles in that state.

2

Get the vehicle inspected by the Vehicle Identity & Inspections Unit (VIIU) in NSW

The Transport for NSW Vehicle Identity & Inspections Unit inspects interstate registered written-off vehicles before they are registered in NSW.

Book a VIIU inspection

3

Apply for NSW registration

Follow the same steps as you would to register any other used or secondhand vehicle.
