Contact details
Freshwater has a rich beach culture stretching for more than 100 years. Come and learn about the area’s surfing history and other interesting historical facts.
In December 1914, during a demonstration, Duke Kahanamoku, the world sprint swimming champion, introduced surf board riding to Australia at Freshwater Beach.
It was the first recorded time that anyone had surfed beyond the break in Australian waters using this Hawaiian-style surfing technique. The surf board has been on display in the Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club since 1952. There is now a statue of the Duke on the Headland at Freshwater.
