Overview of this event
The Barragga Yangga Many Songs Festival is the culmination of a series of residencies held at Four Winds in 2024, bringing community members and artists together to explore storytelling, song learning, and orchestration. Showcasing newly created material performed by Djinama Yilaga and special guests – Barragga Yangga is a musical and cultural event not to be missed.
Under the guidance of Four Winds First Nations Creative Director Cheryl Davison, the project aims to strengthen the local Community's connection to their cultural heritage by integrating First Nations stories and traditions into new works. Long term, Barragga Yangga's mission is to foster cultural exchange, promote understanding across generations, and create a lasting legacy of unity and respect.
The project brings together an impressive group of multi-disciplinary artists to take a deep dive into Dhurga language and culture. Visiting performers and choirs from across the NSW south coast and beyond are invited to immerse themselves in three days of storytelling, language and song workshops, culminating in a dynamic participatory showcase of newly created material on the Four Winds outdoor amphitheatre featuring Djinama Yilaga Choir, Butchulla songman Fred Leone, Yuin rap artist Gabadu, Sydney Conservatorium of Music Students, Affinity Quartet and Stonewave Taiko with arrangements by conductor and mentor Roland Peelman AM and musician Heath Cullen featuring orchestration by Stuart Hunter.
