Overview of this event
Renowned artist Matteo Bernasconi invites you to Essential—a striking portrait exhibition exploring the role of artists in society.
This collection is both a celebration and a defence of the creative community, whose contributions often go unrecognised. Born from reflections during the pandemic, Essential challenges us to reconsider the true value of art.
"Art is often dismissed as a luxury" says Bernasconi. "But without it, we are just beasts."
The exhibition features portraits of influential Australian cultural figures, including:
Tony Backhouse – A pioneering force in a cappella gospel music, inspiring choirs and workshops worldwide.
Leanne Benjamin – The Queensland-born former principal of The Royal Ballet, celebrated for her extraordinary career.
Declan Kelly – One of Australia's most respected musicians, collaborating with top Australian and international artists
Nathalie Morris – French-Australian actress, currently starring in the acclaimed TV series Bump. These portraits are more than paintings—they are tributes to resilience, creativity, and the human spirit.
Come and enjoy this opening night free event.
