Councillor Misconduct Review Released

What’s this about?

The independent review into the framework governing councillor misconduct has been released.

The review examined the current administrative framework under which complaints about councillor misconduct are managed, including analysis of other jurisdictions.

The report makes 49 recommendations, which are summarised in the Consultation Guide.  The recommendations for change are extensive and include:

• a new, independent framework for dealing with councillor misconduct
• the establishment of an independent Councillor Conduct Commission to oversee regional Councillor Conduct Review Panels
• tougher penalties and sanctions to respond to misconduct, including the ability to impose monetary penalties.

The NSW Government is inviting further feedback and submissions on the key recommendations for change contained in the report, in particular, recommendations for significant changes to the management of councillor misconduct in NSW.
