Renewing a learner or provisional licence

If your learner driver licence is expiring, to renew it you’ll have to pass the Driver Knowledge Test again. You also need to do the eyesight test and pay the learner licence fee. Any driving hours recorded in your log book or app will still be recognised, so you won’t need to start again.

Your new learner licence is valid for another 5 years.

If you've already passed a Hazard Perception Test, but haven't passed a driving test within 15 months of that day, you'll need to pass the HPT again before you can take the driving test.

Your rider learner licence is valid for 12 months only. To renew it, you have to go through the same process you did when you first got your learner rider licence. This includes rider training if you live in a declared area and a Rider Knowledge Test. You'll also need to pay the learner licence fee. Your new learner licence will be valid for another 12 months

If your P1 or P2 licence is expiring, you can renew it without taking a knowledge or driving test. However, you may need to pass an eyesight test and/or provide a satisfactory medical report. And you need to pay the provisional licence fee.

• P1 licences (red Ps) are valid for 18 months
• P2 rider licences (green Ps) are valid for 30 months
• P2 driver licences (green Ps) are valid for 36 months.

There's no maximum time limit for moving through the provisional P1 and P2 licence stages. You can renew a P1 or P2 licence as many times as you need to.

Most P1 or P2 licence holders can renew their licences online.

You can also graduate from P1 to P2 or from P2 to unrestricted online.
