Mail Handling Policy

This policy directs employees at Youth Justice Centres to open and check all incoming mail and parcels, other than letters from exempt bodies such as Legal Aid. This practice ensures the security, safety and good order of Youth Justice Centres.

The purpose of the Youth Justice Mail Handling Policy is to:

  • provide consistency in practice across centres
  • inform all employees of legislative requirements
  • inform all employees of the requirements of the Division.

The policy contains information for Centre employees about communication between detainees and family, co-accused and others. It specifies delegations, inspection requirements, and exemptions.
