This proof-of-concept project aims to evaluate and optimise the conversion of cotton gin waste (CGW), an abundant and underutilised agricultural by-product, into renewable methane-rich biogas using a rumen-derived anaerobic digestion (RuDAD) system. Cotton gin waste is generated in significant quantities by Australia's cotton industry and currently incurs substantial disposal and energy costs for cotton ginners. Building on previous research and preliminary experimental work demonstrating the production of combustible biogas using rumen-derived digestion, the project will commission and operate a 60 L mesophilic bioreactor to assess methane production, reactor stability and nutrient optimisation. The project seeks to de-risk cotton gin waste as a renewable energy feedstock by generating operational and engineering data to support future scale-up and commercial deployment within the Australian cotton industry. Please also note the Letter of support from Sundown Pastoral Company (Additional Upload).

Waste Circology is an Australian circular economy SME that has developed a patented Organic Carbonisation System (OCS) to transform problematic waste streams In the construction industry, biochar is currently being used as a functional admixture in concrete to sequester carbon, transforming the built environment into a long-term carbon sink. However, it inherently lacks the mechanical reactivity needed to strengthen concrete. In some cases, it can even reduce concrete strengths, which limits its use in structural applications. To overcome this limitation, Waste Circology aims to process its biochar into nanoscale carbon particles. At this scale, the material is expected to physically fill microscopic voids within the cementitious matrix and act as highly active seeding sites to accelerate cement hydration. This dual mechanism is anticipated to yield concrete with significantly improved density and structural performance. By simultaneously sequestering carbon and enhancing mechanical strength, this innovation provides the construction sector with a commercially viable admixture suitable for demanding structural applications. Third-party (SCU) R&D validation is required to prove its structural efficacy to the market. To achieve widespread commercial adoption This project is therefore needed to generate scientific evidence of performance and accelerate the product’s entry into commercial supply chains.

Phytogen Solutions proposes to undertake a controlled field validation trial at Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) land — a real, PFAS-impacted Commonwealth airport site — using Phytogen Solutions high-biomass industrial hemp genetics. The trial will test three treatment conditions: untreated control plots, hemp-only plots, and hemp treated with Phytogen Solutions proprietary soil additive Hempurizer+. Published international reference material, including a Belgian field study, suggests hemp combined with soil additives achieved approximately 67% overall PFAS removal in a single cultivation cycle. Phytogen Solutions seeks to validate and localise this outcome under Queensland conditions, using Australian-grown genetics and a fully auditable field methodology.

Black Soldier Fly larval (BSFL) bioconversion has been extensively validated as an effective, efficient biological treatment for a range of organic waste streams. However, its application to dog waste specifically presents a set of novel research challenges that are not yet resolved in the published literature. Chief among these is the interference of residual veterinary insecticides — particularly fipronil, permethrin, and imidacloprid, present in routine flea and tick treatments — with BSFL a residual veterinary insecticides — particularly fipronil, permethrin, and imidacloprid, ctivity. The impact of these compounds on BSFL performance at concentrations realistic in domestic dog waste is a genuine and commercially significant research gap. This project will deliver the early-stage scientific validation required to establish whether BSFL-based bioconversion of dog waste is technically feasible within the BioFetch Collection Vault system, and under what conditions that feasibility can be achieved or restored through pretreatment strategies.

Millions of tonnes of mining tailings across Australia contain valuable metals including copper, zinc, gold, and critical minerals like rare earth elements. These waste streams occupy limited space at operating mines and pose environmental hazards at legacy sites through issues like acid mine drainage. This project advances a novel chlorination process developed by EcoTech Minerals to extract valuable metals from mining waste. Working with the University of Newcastle, researchers will optimize a pilot plant to treat three different waste streams. By testing different operating conditions across varied feed compositions, this research will generate essential data for scaling up to demonstration plant level. Results will establish optimal processing parameters for different tailings types, advancing both metal recovery and environmental remediation capabilities while creating additional revenue streams from mining waste.

This project aims to investigate whether (E,E)-bisantrene (RCDS1) functions as a G-quadruplex (G4) stabiliser in BRCA-mutated breast and ovarian cancers. The therapeutic rationale for this project builds on the success of Pidnarulex (CX-5461), the first G4-stabilising agent to enter clinical trials. Pidnarulex has demonstrated high potency in BRCA1/2-mutant cancers, where defective homologous recombination repair renders tumour cells particularly vulnerable to replication stress and DNA damage induced by G4 stabilisation. This vulnerability reflects a classic synthetic lethality: BRCA-mutated cells already lack the ability to effectively repair double-strand DNA breaks, and when G4 structures are stabilised, they create replication fork stalling and persistent DNA lesions. In BRCA proficient cells, these can be repaired; but in BRCA-deficient cells, repair failure leads to catastrophic genomic instability and cell death. Recently, Race Oncology has discovered that RCDS1 can also bind and stabalise G4 structures, and thus, it may reproduce or even enhance this selective anti-tumour effect in BRCA-mutant cancers. The project aims to 1) Evaluate the Efficacy and Selective Toxicity of RCDS1 with respect to BRCA-mutated cells and BRCA wild-type controls, and 2) understand the Mechanism of Action of RCDS1 (to be performed in the best-selected models from Aim 1).

The performance requirements for fire protection of commercial signage on building façades have increased significantly in the wake of incidents like the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire. In Australia, this has led to tighter regulations on the fire performance of façade components, including signage materials. Cooper Create currently faces costly options for compliance and is therefore seeking a low-cost, coatings-based solution to retrofit existing signs. This project aims to develop a flame-retardant coating that can be applied to existing polyacrylate plastic signage as a simple, minimally disruptive solution. The coating should achieve ‘fire retardant’ performance for the treated signage while maintaining acceptable appearance and transparency. It should be capable of slowing ignition, suppressing flame propagation, and minimizing smoke generation while maintaining acceptable appearance, optical clarity, and surface smoothness. The ultimate goal is to provide a transparent protective layer that enhances fire safety compliance without compromising the signage’s original visual and functional characteristics.

With the closure of Australia’s automotive sector a decade ago, Australia has effectively lost its aluminium recycling and manufacturing capabilities. This project aims to reverse this by re-invigorating the ability of Australia to transform its 467,664 tons of aluminum waste in high value commodities through innovation. Hydrogien, an Australian SME, has developed methods to convert aluminium scrap into hydrogen and alumina, yielding 112 Liter H2 per kg of aluminium, equating to 3.7 kWh of chemical energy. Current scrap aluminium prices suggest H2 production costs are competitive compared to green electrolysis. Furthermore, the process produces valuable alumina, which serves a growing market with applications across various industries. This project will act as a sound board to validate Hydrogien innovative waste-to-hydrogen technology enabling on-demand hydrogen production via an aluminium-water reaction. It will lay the groundwork for the demonstration of pilot systems in collaboration with end-users, assist Hydrogien in advancing its Technology Readiness Level.

This project aims to develop an intelligent matching, scheduling, and dispatching system that will be integrated into the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform owned by Intelligent System Australia Pty Ltd. Many restaurant businesses currently rely on multiple third-party delivery platforms facing high commission rates and inefficient multi-platform order management. At the same time, a large proportion of their customers are located within a short distance and do not require costly delivery services. This project seeks to address these challenges by enabling restaurants to better utilise in-house and external delivery resources and optimise assignments using intelligent algorithms. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Dr Wei Bao’s team at University of Sydney, combining the company’s experience in CRM system development with the University’s expertise in optimisation and scheduling. The outcome will be an intelligent scheduling and dispatching engine, which will be integrated into the existing CRM system and made available to restaurant clients. The enhanced platform will improve restaurant efficiency, reduce operational costs, and support the sustainable growth of Australia’s small and micro food businesses.

This project aims to develop a novel hybrid dry shampoo with integrated sun protection, addressing the unmet need for convenient scalp UV defence in everyday personal care. The innovation lies in using alcohol-soluble polymer microparticles that combine oil-absorbing, sunscreen-releasing, and scalp-soothing functions within a single formulation. These engineered microparticles, composed of ethyl cellulose or Eudragit-based polymers, dissolve in scalp sebum to form a thin protective film, enabling controlled local release of sunscreen agents such as avobenzone and octisalate while minimising systemic absorption and hair staining. The project will be jointly undertaken by SNF Pty Ltd and the University of Sydney. The University will provide scientific expertise in microparticle engineering, characterisation, and stability testing, while SNF will lead the formulation optimisation and commercial scalability. Together, the partners aim to generate pilot data to demonstrate product feasibility, safety, and consumer acceptability, establishing a strong foundation for regulatory approval and future commercial launch. The outcome of this project will be a proof-of-concept formulation platform with potential applications beyond haircare, including sunscreen lotions, scalp treatments, and protective skincare, contributing to innovation in Australia’s cosmeceutical industries.

This project is developing a portable version of Printed Solar—flexible solar technology from Kardinia Energy—designed for quick and easy setup. Printed Solar has already featured in five major public demonstrations, including powering part of Coldplay’s global “Music of the Spheres” tour. With over 500 m² of panels and more than 3.7 million attendees, the project highlighted both the potential and limitations of the current Printed Solar system. The new prototype aims to solve a critical challenge: making Printed Solar fast to deploy and use by non-experts. It will integrate smarter electronics, improved solar coating, and a streamlined physical design. Key innovations include automated solar cell separation for improved manufacturing speed, refined thin-film coating for greater consistency, and an all-in-one housing that removes the need for separate wiring and controls. By simplifying installation and optimising production, this rapid deployment unit could allow anyone—from event crews to emergency responders—to harness solar energy on demand. It also builds on previous research to create scalable energy solutions that meet practical, real-world needs.

Maggot therapy is the evidence-based highly efficacious treatment of chronic wounds with living fly larvae to remove dead tissue (debridement), control infection, and promote wound healing. Similitude Pty Ltd | MedMagLabs www.medmaglabs.com is a startup aiming to supply Australian and overseas clinicians and veterinarians with medicinal maggots for chronic wound care. To that end we have partnered with the University of Wollongong to establish a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility at the University. The facilities available at the University are uniquely suited to MedMagLabs needs because not only does a GMP production facility for medicinal maggots require access to sterile work environment and wetlab facilities but also rooms that can be fitted out to serve as an insectary for fly production. Such a combination of resources is very hard to find and usually requires custom construction which is too costly at this early stage of business development. With a GMP facility and compliant standard operating procedures in place, MedMagLabs will meet the prerequisites for Therapeutic Goods Administration and Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicine Authority approval and sale of medicinal maggots for therapy in humans and animals.
