Recover and protect your identification documents
If you suspect that you may be a victim of identity theft or your identity has been compromised, taking quick action can help you limit the fraudulent use of your identity.
Take these steps to secure your compromised documents and protect yourself from harm and identity misuse:
Your birth or marriage certificate is one of the most important ways to prove who you are and is considered a primary identification source.
Criminals use life event documents and certificates, including your name, date of birth, registration number, names of mother and father, and personal information. Criminals may try to combine your information with other identifying details to access or open accounts, apply for credit or loans in your name, and create a profile with credible information that they can use to impersonate or scam you.
Replace or block your certificate
Replacing your certificate will not mitigate the risk of misuse, as it will be reissued with the same registration number and issue date.
You can, however, place a block on the certificate. This block stops a person from using your details as proof of identity through the Document Verification Service.
It is recommended that you contact ID Support NSW to request a block and further safeguard your identity documents and devices from any potential misuse.
