Project overview
Cowper St, Glebe NSW 2037
As part of our work to revitalise social and affordable housing across Sydney’s Inner West, Homes NSW has delivered 75 new social homes at 17–31 Cowper Street and 2A–2D Wentworth Park Road, Glebe.
The project replaces ageing estate housing that was no longer fit-for-purpose with modern, high-quality social housing. It increases the number of homes available and better reflects the needs of contemporary tenants, many of whom live alone or in small households. The development also includes accessible apartments, ensuring homes are available to people with diverse mobility and accessibility needs.
The development is within walking distance of local shops, bus stops and the Wentworth Park light rail.
Glebe is a much-loved suburb with a rich history and strong street character. The design of the new development responds sensitively to this context, supporting not only social housing residents but also the wider Glebe community through thoughtful scale, layout and streetscape integration. Green roofs, extensive landscaping and upgraded footpaths enhance the local environment, improve sustainability and amenity, and contribute to a greener, more walkable neighbourhood.
The redevelopment has transformed the site into a contemporary residential precinct comprising:
- two eight-storey residential towers, and
- a three-storey terraced building, reflecting the established grain of the surrounding neighbourhood.
These buildings include:
| Type of home | Number of homes |
|---|---|
| Studio apartments | 3 |
| 1-bedroom apartments | 40 |
| 2-bedroom apartments | 27 |
| 3-bedroom terraces | 5 |
Together, these new homes provide safe, comfortable and contemporary housing while reinforcing the character, accessibility and liveability of Glebe.
Sydney architectural firm Johnson Pilton Walker designed the project, which was inspired by Glebe’s rich history. It also included expert design advice from The King’s Trust Australia.
We partnered with Kane Constructions and Bridge Housing to deliver the project.
