Changes to the Liquor Promotion Guidelines, Prevention of Intoxication Guidelines and Intoxication Guidelines
Following consultation with industry, health and advocacy groups, Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW) has updated the Liquor Promotion Guidelines, Prevention of Intoxication Guidelines and Intoxication Guidelines.
Key changes to the guidelines are outlined below.
Liquor Promotion Guidelines
- New information around the harms associated with the promotion of liquor in the online sales environment have been added. Information relates to:
- voluntary best practice measures about promoting liquor through digital marketing and social media
- examples of unacceptable promotions in the online sales environment
- miscellaneous changes to ensure the guidelines remain up to date, including modernisation updates to Principle 5 – extreme discounts
- Updates in relation to non-alcoholic products held out to be beer, wine or spirits.
Intoxication Guidelines and Prevention of Intoxication Guidelines
- A new section on drink spiking has been included in both guidelines. It contains a list of symptoms, voluntary steps to prevent drink spiking on premises, and best practices to manage drink spiking incidents on premises.
- Enhanced guidance in the ‘steps to prevent intoxication’ section, in the Prevention of Intoxication Guidelines, stating that food must be made available whenever liquor is sold or supplied on the premises, if this is a requirement of the licence under the Liquor Act 2007 or any associated licence conditions.
- Enhanced guidance in the Intoxication Guidelines recommending that venues make a record of their actions and interactions with patrons who are identified as intoxicated in or around their venue.
The updated guidelines can be found on the liquor guidelines web page.
