Speaking same language as culturally diverse businesses
Liquor & Gaming NSW is supporting culturally diverse businesses to operate safely and responsibly through a targeted education campaign.
With more than 280 languages spoken in NSW, L&GNSW inspectors have been visiting venues across Sydney to ensure operators from non-English speaking backgrounds know their responsibilities.
Liquor & Gaming NSW A/Executive Director Regulatory Operations Bernadette Beard said the proactive engagement campaign focused on local government areas with higher levels of culturally diverse communities.
“We built our campaign around the common languages spoken by people in Burwood, Fairfield, City of Sydney, Willoughby, Cumberland, Ryde, Georges River and Liverpool council areas,” Ms Beard said.
“We engaged with Multicultural NSW on its Multilingual NSW program to translate our Self-Audit Checklists for On-premises and Packaged Liquor licence compliance documents into Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese.
“A QR Code was also created to provide easy access to the translated forms.”
Ms Beard said inspectors also engaged with licensees, managers and staff to ensure they understood their requirements relating to compliance issues, such as signage, record keeping and Responsible Service of Alcohol training.
“About 350 premises have now received a visit from our inspectors, building on our educational engagement with venues,” Ms Beard said.
“While proficiency in English is required for business operators and staff to complete compulsory training, such as Responsible Service of Alcohol, many were not aware of the self-audit compliance checklists available in other languages on our website.
“Of those venues we visited, 76 per cent said having information in language was useful, resulting in increased knowledge and greater compliance.”
Due to the ongoing success of the campaign, more resource materials will be translated into other languages and inspectors will continue visiting businesses.

Multilingual NSW is a whole of government program which supports NSW Government agencies to produce community messages in language.
