The project is being delivered under two planning applications. The first planning application (Early Works) includes the antenatal expansion and works to prepare the site for the Main Works. The application was approved in April 2026, and TCQ Construction was appointed to deliver the Early Works. Construction is anticipated to commence in mid 2026, with the new antenatal service expected to open to the community in 2027, ahead of the broader redevelopment.
Main works construction timeframes will be confirmed following planning determination and the appointment of a contractor.
Additional funding
Planning is progressing to deliver the enhanced inpatient maternity and special care nursery facilities for families in Canterbury and surrounding areas. The funding will support the fit-out and relocation of an existing inpatient unit into the new nine-storey building, enabling the enhancement of maternity and special care nursery facilities.
A separate planning application process will take place for the enhanced maternity services to be delivered. Planning for the enhanced maternity and neonatal facilities will commence in the coming weeks with staff and stakeholder consultation playing a key role in shaping the design.
