Members of the National Art School Board of Directors contribute to the long-term strategic planning of the National Art School, including governance and oversight of the National Art School’s strategic direction and performance, and providing expert advice and support to the shareholding members and Director (CEO) on any matter relating to the school. The Directors are responsible for accountability, strategy, resourcing, advocacy and monitoring.
Applications are invited from candidates who demonstrate skills and experience in audit and governance, leading organisational reform and enhancing performance, developing commercial, community and institutional partnerships, philanthropy, and/or who have strong sector knowledge such as the higher education management, the visual arts (including alumni of the National Art School), or experience activating and managing a commercial and/or cultural precinct.

The Board is comprised of between five and nine members. The Minister for the Arts and Minister for Education appoint all members, including a member to serve as the Chairperson.
Members will serve a term as a ‘casual appointee’ of up to one year. Members will be eligible for reappointment for a first term of up to three years. Members can serve no more than three consecutive formal terms.
A Code of Conduct governs board members’ participation. All members are required to declare their interests upon appointment and again prior to the commencement of Board meetings.
Board meetings will take place both in person (at the National Art School in Sydney) and online.
A minimum of four meetings are held per year. Board members will be notified of Board meetings in advance, and it is expected that members be available for these meetings. Meetings will be held during business hours and will typically last no longer than three hours.
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held in May each year.
The National Art School Board of Directors is classified as a B2 Board under the Public Service Commission’s Classification and Remuneration Framework for NSW Government Boards and Committees. Board Members are paid $5,000 per annum. NSW Government Public Service employees are not entitled to remuneration.
The Chairperson facilitates meetings, ensures good governance, and provides advice and recommendations to other board members and the Director of the School.
The Chairperson is appointed by the Minister for Arts and the Minister for Education.
