Broken Hill Hospital upgraded Emergency Department reaches another milestone
The Broken Hill Hospital Emergency Department (ED) has reached its latest milestone, with Stage 2 of the $12 million project now complete.
Stage 2 includes the reconfiguration of five treatment bays, staff spaces and clinical back-of-house areas to provide a more functional clinical workspace for staff, as well as patients in need of emergency care.
The ED upgrade is being built in three stages, with Stage 1 completed in March 2025. The ED continues to remain open while work is carried out to minimise the interruption to emergency department services and patientcare.
The final stage of the ED upgrade is now underway and includes the construction of a new main entry, reception area, waiting room and triage space, as well as an interview/consult room and two treatment bays.
Patients and visitors are advised of the following changes which are now in place until the completion of the ED upgrade:
• The existing ED waiting room is now closed and has been relocated to the ED main corridor.
• A temporary reception area and triage space has also been established.
• Wayfinding signage and maps have been installed throughout the hospital to direct people to the new ED waiting room.
• Patients presenting after-hours can access the ED by using the intercom and then following the signs to access emergency care.

A new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit (MHIPU) is also being delivered in parallel, separately funded under the NSW Government’s $700m Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program.
Construction on the MHIPU is progressing well and is expected to be completed in late 2025.
